Cleaner Cars from Cradle to Grave: How Electric Cars Beat Gasoline Cars on Lifetime Global Warming Emissions

Note: This website contains information that includes a chance to download a report.

Excerpt: “But what are the global warming emissions of electric cars on a life cycle basis—from the manufacturing of the vehicle’s body and battery to its ultimate disposal and reuse? To answer this, the Union of Concerned Scientists undertook a comprehensive, two-year review of the climate emissions from vehicle production, operation, and disposal. We found that battery electric cars generate half the emissions of the average comparable gasoline car, even when pollution from battery manufacturing is accounted for.”

As we wrap up this month’s deep dive into green energy and electric car batteries, please reflect on these questions:

  1. Were you previously aware of the information presented in this month’s readings?

  2. If not, what did you learn?

  3. How concerned are you about the following as they pertain to electric vehicles and/or other forms of green energy?

    1. potential human rights impacts

    2. environmental impacts from cradle to grave

    3. climate change

    4. health impacts from the cradle to grave

As always, we ask you to share these readings and your thoughts with your networks, friends, and colleagues.
