OUR WHY

For centuries, historically excluded populations have had narratives created and sustained about them. Some populations have been erased from the narrative. These narratives may be upheld by biased, racist, and oppressive assumptions, which can then lead to unfair questions and ideas that haven't been proven or disproven. The normalization of this bias may have led to persistent data gaps, preventing the creation of effective interventions and solutions. Until Justice Data Partners, seeks to demystify and normalize the use of research and data, not only in social justice work but also in daily life. We want to normalize asking questions and seeking answers.

OUR MISSION & VALUES

We are rooted in the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing, meaning that we honor the expertise of disproportionately impacted and marginalized communities. Differences are not deficits. We also believe that disproportionately impacted communities must take the lead, celebrating the work they have already done to sustain their communities. We call ourselves partners because we do not view ourselves as heroes. We are partners, using our knowledge and access to serve and partner with communities. At Until Justice Data Partners (UJDP), we believe that data can be a powerful advocacy tool to create and sustain more effective interventions. We assist our partners in incorporating data into their advocacy work through research partnerships, locating existing resources, and uplifting data gaps. UJDP also believes that lived experience and non-traditional sources of data have value. These sources include non-traditional academic knowledge systems and the importance of art as a means to transmit information (data).

OUR VISION

UJDP seeks to encourage more community-based research and partnerships, creating a community of justice researchers empowered to use data in their work. We strive to unite and expand the data community for the social good.

OUR GOALS

1. Normalize the discussion and use of data in everyday life.

2. Use data and the scientific method to challenge potentially harmful narratives that impact planning and decision-making.

3. Encourage more community-driven investigation and research to reduce data gaps and uplift new data questions.

4. Increase the number of community-based participatory research partnerships between communities and traditional research organizations and institutions.
